5digits on 2.2 background, racing and history

Was the Lotus 2.2 16V to be the "ultimate" production turbo 2.2?

YES

Was there going to be a 2.5 16V in production?

It was considered. The Kim Lyon project was "essentially" the first exposure, to its capabilities. Later 2.5/16V development evolved into the 2.4.

Was there ever going to be a 2.2 N/A 16V?

Yes. The 2.2 was going to receive two BIG potential changes.

#1) One was the 16v investigation. Most everyone knows of the Hans Hermann head, the lotus, and the Maserati; But Chrysler was investigating the potential for their own package.

The cool part is.. They actually built a proto-type. An even cooler thing is they went into production, with it. Seriously!!!!  If you are interested in seeing it, open the hood of an early Neon, with the DOHC. I kid you not!! That's it!!  Most of the design was taken directly from the lotus unit. While looking at the Neon engine, squint your eyes and imagine the red colors! You'll see it!!!

#2) The second change was going to be the introduction of a new 8V head. Some have heard of it. The +2,-2 head featured a larger intake valve, a smaller exhaust valve, an improved/smaller bowl area, and some minor structural changes. This goes back to our previous discussion of "Bigger is better". The exhaust valve was smaller and the exhaust port was smaller, AND the intake bowl was smaller AND IT FLOWED MORE AIR, MADE MORE TORQUE, AND MADE MORE HORSE POWER.

Huh? how can that be? I don't get it? Sadly, most never do OR will.

What happened to the 1.8 engine that was going to be produced based off the 2.2?

Can you say 2.0L?? A great deal of the 2.0 and 2.4L development was done on 2.2 (modified)
engines. Those concepts were the beginning of the end, for the 2.2 and 2.5. This adaptation is still happening today!

2.2 goes to 2.0

2.5 goes to 2.4

3.0 goes to 2.7

5.2 goes to 4.7

About 10 second Omni's

A little more about the Omni.
Total investment=$1400.00 (but lots of time)
1984 Maroon Omni
2.5 Turbo intercooled
S-60 intercooler
413 Auto trans.
1989 electronics
20-22psi boost
No interior
Fuel cell (in spare tub)
No nitrous
Lexan windows
Inner door metal removed

The rear has been lightened to the point that the rear suspension sits at full extension, with no spring inserts. This car is an excellent example of doing A LOT with a little. Sub 11.30 passes have been personally witnessed; But it has received several changes since then. These changes are responsible for the sub 11.00 ET's.
